Mr. Kolarich, our activities chair, has been hard at work trying to get the Rifle merit badge lined up for you, scouts.  It's still tentative and may not happen,(See Below!) but it looks like we can be cautiously optimistic.  As I find out more, I'll post it for you.  Below, an email to me from Mr. Kolarich.  Thanks, Rory!

I (Mr. Kolarich) have been working on setting up the Rifle Shooting Merit Badge on December 9th for the Scouts in our troop. Things look good to go and I would like to make an announcement at Monday's meeting.

The merit badge would be offered on Saturday, 12/9. We would meet at the Seminole County Gun and Archery Association training range in Geneva at 8:30. The shooting would start around 9 AM. The range has space for 13 boys. The boys would get around 2.5 hours of shooting .22 rifles. If we had more than 13 boys sign up we would need to split them up in morning and afternoon sessions. The cost per boy would be $10.

I have a certified NRA instructor who has registered as a merit badge counselor with the council. We would need around 1.5 - 2 hours of classroom time before the day of the shoot to cover the required merit badge class time. The instructor is open Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday the 5th, 6th or 7th. I'd like to use the Scout Room or a classroom at school. How would I go about locking up a time?

Tom,  Once I get a room lined up I'll send you an email with the message I would like to send to the boys.

Let me know.

Thanks,
Rory

11/16/2006 Update

And here's the letter from Mr. Kolarich confirming that he has completed the arrangements of the Merit Badge!

I have been talking to the Seminole County Gun and Archery Association about holding a Rifle Shooting Merit Badge for our Troop. I am happy to announce that we will be holding a merit badge class in Rifle Shooting for our Troop on Saturday, December 9th!

The SCGAA training range is in Geneva. We will be leaving from the St. Margaret Mary parking lot at 7:30 AM. There will be a practice session for about one hour with .22 rifles. There will be another 1.5 hours of shooting the .22 rifles to meet the marksmanship requirements called out to earn the merit badge.

The classroom session of the merit badge will be held at St. Margaret Mary on Tuesday, December 5th at 7 PM and last for around 90 minutes.

There will be a $10.00 fee to cover the cost of the ammunition, targets, mats, target stands, rifles, etc. The payment can be made in cash to me or in a check made out to BSA Troop 62.

There will be 12 openings in the morning session. Depending on the number of Scouts that are interested we could set up another round of shooting after lunch for an additional 13 Scouts. I would also need some parents to volunteer to help drive.

If you are interested send an email to: rkolarich@earthlink.net or sign up on the list I will have at this Monday night's meeting. The $10.00 fee would need to be paid by Monday, November 27th. I'll fill the first slot of openings on a first come basis.

The requirements for the merit badge are attached. If there are any questions please let me know via email or at the meeting. Many times our Scouts would like to take this merit badge at a summer camp but the slots are filled before we can register. Thanks to the support of the local SCGAA we can now offer this merit badge to our Scouts! If all goes well maybe we can offer this on a regular basis.

Yours in Scouting,
Mr. Kolarich
